The Fourth House

Installation in At Home Gallery

wood, wooden mockup, video ‘1 “34

The Fourth House was built according to a scale-model created in 1974 by István Gladics, the artist’s grandfather. The house-object built as a thirty-fold enlargement of the scale-model has human scale proportions, filling the gallery space – a former Synagogue. The object can be walked round, but not entered. It never becomes a real house.

The video projection belonging to the installation examines a family photography from 1948 taken in exile, as a result of the resettlement program of the Czechoslovak government. On the picture István Gladics appears as a young boy and next to him, in the centre of the picture, behind the family, there is an erased, retouched ghost image of a stranger.
